One Christmas Morning

Christmas stories from Africa are often untold or hidden within the folds of global narratives. This collection of children’s Christmas stories is an invitation to explore the magic of the season from the heart of African landscapes, cultures, and traditions.

These stories are filled with adventure, kindness, and lessons that reflect both the universal themes of the holiday season and the rich heritage of the Nigerian.

Let this collection remind us that Christmas is not just about a place, but about the spirit we carry and share with others.

What Readers Are Saying

Hajara Akioyq, Author of "Amina"

Wow! The stories are short, but very interesting, quite colorful depicting the joy of Christmas in Nigeria. Christians believe that Christmas is a season to give, no matter how little, because God also gave his son to us. In Nigeria, it is a major celebration, so two things stand out in most households - plenty of food and new clothes. It is essentially a time for family that is why we see family members travelling from far and near to celebrate with their relatives at Christmas. The stories all resonate with each other even though they are from different parts of the country, from Lagos to Maiduguri, Delta to Abuja and Oba Akoko in the South West.

The word, 'Beautiful' doesn't do justice to this book! I just finished reading this. I took a break away from my laptop and deadlines to rest and decided to read through One Christmas Morning. I couldn't stop till the last page (the thing about Mayoress' stories and what it does to me!) I laughed, chuckled, got teary, and all the other emotions: rice and detergents, white Christmas trees, dreams come true, yellow toy trucks, inside-out clothes and finding hope, joy and laughter in those little things we so often take for granted. That's the true Spirit of Christmas: spreading that love that came to us as a Baby. Now I know Christmas is here! And I think I know what I need to do... Thank you for this beautiful reminder. And this breadth of fresh air!

Elsie Dennis has served us with an engaging and heart-warming collection of Christmas stories set within familiar Nigerian communities. Each story highlights the magic of Christmas, where laughter and festivity mixes with the reality of scarcity, insufficiency, and in some cases, dwindling hope. Yet, no matter the unfavourable situation, there is always a smile in the end, the deep knowledge that miracles still happen today, especially on Christmas day.

I read the first chapter of Elsie O. Dennis's newest book, One Christmas Morning, and couldn't put the book down. The book is an interesting read; it draws you in, exciting you to long for more pages and inspiring you to see the beauty of making Christmas a beautiful moment for others.
